Hands on Activity
When learning new mathematical concepts students should be able to use hands on activities to help them better understand the information being taught to them. Students show a stronger understanding of the material when using different manipulatives to help them. Hands-on activities motivate students to learning and provide concrete experiences that help students develop problem-solving skills that will help them throughout their mathematics career. A major benefit of using hands on activities in their it builds the interest of the students. Students are motivated to complete the task before them and are excited to step away from the typical textbook learning. This type of teaching helps students develop a strong understanding of the lesson.
I have included a hands on activity that deals with applying similarity. Students will use similar triangles and proportions to discover the distance they need to stand from a mirror in order to see their partners eyes in the mirror if their partner is standing 200 cm away. The students will use their problem solving skills and the hands on materials to find the information they need to solve the problem.

Legend has it that if you stare into a person’s
eyes in a special way, you can hypnotize them into
squawking like a chicken. Here’s how it works:
Place a mirror on the floor. Your victim has to stand exactly
200 cm away from the mirror and stare into it. The only tricky part is
that you need to figure out where you have to stand so that when you stare
into the mirror, you are also staring into your victim’s eyes.
If your calculations are correct and you stand at the
exact distance, your victim will squawk like a chicken!
