In any mathematics classroom, problem solving is a necessary tool that is used to help improve students performance in the classroom. By creating and assigning mathematical problems in your classroom, students become more willing and interested in the mathematics they are learning and are able to use their abilities to solve the problems to improve their self-concepts. Problems such as the one below makes students aware of the different ways one particular problem can be solved and give students the abilities to select appropriate solution strategies and implement them accurately. Problem solving is a way for students to dig deep into their mathematical minds and use problem solving strategies to build upon their mathematical reasoning.
Below I have created a problem that will allow students to think outside of the box. They will need to break down specific given information in order to solve for problem at hand. The students will be given the opportunity to work with partners to problem solve and figure out the solution to given problem. As provided, I will give the students hints if they seem to be stuck or unsure of what to do next. It is necessary we as teachers have ways to help students complete problems and are not providing the problem with no help on the side.
